Anatomy of The Hand

Our hands are able to serve many purposes. They are responsible for functional living. By understanding the anatomy of the hand, you’ll be able to better understand how injury or disease can affect it. The hand and wrist are made up of 27 bones. These bones are categorized into carpals, metacarpals, and phalanges. The hand is made up of five metacarpal bones, one for each finger! The hand also contains 14 phalanges. Each finger, except for the thumb, contains three phalanges while the thumb only has two phalanges. The hand contains nerves, joints, muscles, and tendons to allow articulation and mobility.

Anatomy of The Wrist and Elbow

It’s impossible to talk about the hand without also talking about the wrist. As the most complex joint in the body, the wrist is made up of eight carpal bones which are grouped in two rows. It joins the hand to the forearm and gives us the ability to perform complex articulations. The next joint is the elbow. This hinged joint is comprised of three bones. The humerus, ulna, and radius work together with muscles and tendons to give us the ability to move our arms freely.
